The psychology behind weight loss

>> Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Every January “lose weight” tops almost everybody's resolution list. But, as with a lot of things, it's easier said than done. Despite the fact that most people know the difference between healthy and harmful foods obesity is still a growing health factor in the United States. Since losing weight just involves eating right and exercise, it should be simple, right? But the thing with trying to lose weight is that it's more than simply following a diet and exercise plan. For most people being overweight is as much a psychological issue as it is a health issue. If you want to lose weight, you have to understand the psychology behind losing weight, including why you are currently heavy and tips that can help you lose the weight.

Know your food triggers
Do you tend to eat when you get super stressed? Or maybe you break open a bag of cookies to celebrate when something good happens. Or do you automatically grab for some chips when you sit down to watch TV? Even if you stock up on healthy foods, if you aren't aware of why you were eating poorly, then you are bound to repeat your actions. Think about when you tend to eat the wrong foods and why. Once you know, then you can work on not doing it anymore.

Change your habits
So, now that you know you always grab a chocolate bar or piece of cake when something stressful happens you can work to change that habit. On average it takes about 23 days to break a habit. Instead of reaching for your favorite sugary treat, replace it with an apple, some berries or a handful of nuts.

Avoid all or nothing thinking
When it comes to approaching weight loss, most people have an all or nothing way of thinking. They’ll decide to try to lose weight and will adopt a strict 5 days a week exercise program and 100% healthy eating plan. They'll stick to it for a week or two and then something will happen to throw them off course. They immediately think since they slipped there's no sense and will instantly fall back to their old way of living. They key to remember is that nobody is perfect: you may slack off on your exercise or have too much junk food. Acknowledge the slip, then get back on the program. Slipping up isn't a reason to toss the whole exercise and healthy eating plan.

Little things add up
With that being said, you also don't want to fall into the mind set of “just one chocolate bar won't hurt.” It won't but if you have these moments every day or so, then it could all add up. This is a great way for your brain to trick you into thinking that you are eating healthy when really you aren't.

Reality TV isn't all that realistic
You're trying to lose weight and you're having a tough time. You love watching weight lose reality TV shows, but they depress you: you don't understand why those people seem to have no problem dropping the pounds. So you say the heck with it, there's no sense trying. The thing to remember about reality TV weight loss shows is that the contestants have the 24 hour support of professionals. You probably don't. So watch those shows to get tips on eating and exercise, not to compare your journey with theirs. Because it's completely different.

Losing weight can be a battle. Trying to figure out what's healthy to eat can seem almost impossible. Never mind attempting to avoid your favorite naughty foods. But understanding some of the mind-sets that can help you to be successful can make weight loss a lot easier.

Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

>> Sunday, July 17, 2011

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) has become a common problem all around the world. There are many controversies around this syndrome. Some say that this is not a true physical condition but a mental state. Others say that these people are just more sensitive and are more affected by the world we live in. In fact, CFS is not recognized by most medical doctors or physicians as being a real condition. Rather, they attribute the symptoms to anxiety or depression. As more people are diagnosed with this condition, however, the medical field is going to have to take a long hard look at the symptoms, causes and cures for CFS. Thankfully, there are remedies through naturopaths, chiropractors and other health experts who have studied CFS enough to know that it is not only real, but it is also treatable.

There are many thoughts on CFS, its causes and its treatments. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is often referred to as Adrenal Fatigue because some feel that the condition is caused by a weak drenal system. The symptoms of CFS and AF are exactly the same, so it is not unusual for them to be treated as one, although CFS has gained more approval by the medical field. Fibromyalgia is a condition that often co-exists with these problems. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Adrenal Fatigue bring fatigue to the body, while Fibromyalgia brings pain to the joints and tendons.

If a person thinks that they have CFS, it will be difficult to get a diagnosis from a medical professional. It is not classified as a health issue. A group of symptoms that are unexplainable and that occur in many people is often referred to as a syndrome. When enough of the same symptoms bother enough people, it is then referred to as a syndrome. However, there is no medical explanation or tests to prove the existence of such a condition and therefore, the medical field generally disregards the significance of CFS and AF.

Health professionals are more likely to recognize and diagnosis Fibromyalgia because of the obvious pain issues. Fibromyalgia brings soft tissue pain that is unexplainable but sometimes helped by pain medications, sunlight and rest. Fibromyalgia causes pressure points, places on the body that hurt to the touch. Oftentimes, a person with CFS or AF will develop Fibromyalgia symptoms as well.

All three of these conditions generally require the support of a health advisor or professional who can give them direction. It can be hard for a person to diagnosis himself because of the varied symptoms. People who suspect that they have CFS can often find many resources on the internet and at their local libraries.

Getting plenty of rest is the number one help for people with CFS. It is often difficult for them to rest because their bodies begin to run on cortisone which makes them feel like they have lots of energy. They need to avoid caffeine and stressful situations so they can rest when their bodies are tired. People with CFS sometimes become too worn out and then they "crash" meaning that they can't even get out of bed because they are so exhausted. The best hope for recovery is rest.

Having CFS means being extra careful not to over-do it at home or on the job. When at work, they need to sit in comfortable chairs and take breaks as needed. Oftentimes, people with CFS have unstable blood sugar so they need to eat high protein snacks throughout the day, along with plenty of good water. At home, they may need to rest often, taking a daily nap and not doing too much physical exercise. Gentle exercise is good, but too much exercise will result in extreme fatigue and sore muscles.

Many people with CFS have found herbal supplements and vitamins to help them. Licorice, ginseng, Vitamins B and C, withania root and adrenal drops are some of the supplements and vitamins that people have found helpful. Some people don't notice many improvements from using supplements while others seem to feel much better. Natural supplements do not work as quickly as prescription medications. Before expecting any improvements, be prepared to take supplements and vitamins for several weeks.

A person with CFS needs to plan to slow down and make some lifestyle changes in order to get better. Getting help with housework, working only part time and limiting social functions are some changes that may need to be made. Trips can wear her out physically, mentally and emotionally. Therefore, she may need extra help getting to appointments and the grocery store.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is called an invisible disease because the patient may look and act absolutely normal. He may be completely exhausted, however and unable to cope with too much stress. Taking care of your body, reducing stress and getting extra rest are the best ways to help your body recover from CFS.
