The psychology behind weight loss

>> Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Every January “lose weight” tops almost everybody's resolution list. But, as with a lot of things, it's easier said than done. Despite the fact that most people know the difference between healthy and harmful foods obesity is still a growing health factor in the United States. Since losing weight just involves eating right and exercise, it should be simple, right? But the thing with trying to lose weight is that it's more than simply following a diet and exercise plan. For most people being overweight is as much a psychological issue as it is a health issue. If you want to lose weight, you have to understand the psychology behind losing weight, including why you are currently heavy and tips that can help you lose the weight.

Know your food triggers
Do you tend to eat when you get super stressed? Or maybe you break open a bag of cookies to celebrate when something good happens. Or do you automatically grab for some chips when you sit down to watch TV? Even if you stock up on healthy foods, if you aren't aware of why you were eating poorly, then you are bound to repeat your actions. Think about when you tend to eat the wrong foods and why. Once you know, then you can work on not doing it anymore.

Change your habits
So, now that you know you always grab a chocolate bar or piece of cake when something stressful happens you can work to change that habit. On average it takes about 23 days to break a habit. Instead of reaching for your favorite sugary treat, replace it with an apple, some berries or a handful of nuts.

Avoid all or nothing thinking
When it comes to approaching weight loss, most people have an all or nothing way of thinking. They’ll decide to try to lose weight and will adopt a strict 5 days a week exercise program and 100% healthy eating plan. They'll stick to it for a week or two and then something will happen to throw them off course. They immediately think since they slipped there's no sense and will instantly fall back to their old way of living. They key to remember is that nobody is perfect: you may slack off on your exercise or have too much junk food. Acknowledge the slip, then get back on the program. Slipping up isn't a reason to toss the whole exercise and healthy eating plan.

Little things add up
With that being said, you also don't want to fall into the mind set of “just one chocolate bar won't hurt.” It won't but if you have these moments every day or so, then it could all add up. This is a great way for your brain to trick you into thinking that you are eating healthy when really you aren't.

Reality TV isn't all that realistic
You're trying to lose weight and you're having a tough time. You love watching weight lose reality TV shows, but they depress you: you don't understand why those people seem to have no problem dropping the pounds. So you say the heck with it, there's no sense trying. The thing to remember about reality TV weight loss shows is that the contestants have the 24 hour support of professionals. You probably don't. So watch those shows to get tips on eating and exercise, not to compare your journey with theirs. Because it's completely different.

Losing weight can be a battle. Trying to figure out what's healthy to eat can seem almost impossible. Never mind attempting to avoid your favorite naughty foods. But understanding some of the mind-sets that can help you to be successful can make weight loss a lot easier.

Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

>> Sunday, July 17, 2011

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) has become a common problem all around the world. There are many controversies around this syndrome. Some say that this is not a true physical condition but a mental state. Others say that these people are just more sensitive and are more affected by the world we live in. In fact, CFS is not recognized by most medical doctors or physicians as being a real condition. Rather, they attribute the symptoms to anxiety or depression. As more people are diagnosed with this condition, however, the medical field is going to have to take a long hard look at the symptoms, causes and cures for CFS. Thankfully, there are remedies through naturopaths, chiropractors and other health experts who have studied CFS enough to know that it is not only real, but it is also treatable.

There are many thoughts on CFS, its causes and its treatments. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is often referred to as Adrenal Fatigue because some feel that the condition is caused by a weak drenal system. The symptoms of CFS and AF are exactly the same, so it is not unusual for them to be treated as one, although CFS has gained more approval by the medical field. Fibromyalgia is a condition that often co-exists with these problems. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Adrenal Fatigue bring fatigue to the body, while Fibromyalgia brings pain to the joints and tendons.

If a person thinks that they have CFS, it will be difficult to get a diagnosis from a medical professional. It is not classified as a health issue. A group of symptoms that are unexplainable and that occur in many people is often referred to as a syndrome. When enough of the same symptoms bother enough people, it is then referred to as a syndrome. However, there is no medical explanation or tests to prove the existence of such a condition and therefore, the medical field generally disregards the significance of CFS and AF.

Health professionals are more likely to recognize and diagnosis Fibromyalgia because of the obvious pain issues. Fibromyalgia brings soft tissue pain that is unexplainable but sometimes helped by pain medications, sunlight and rest. Fibromyalgia causes pressure points, places on the body that hurt to the touch. Oftentimes, a person with CFS or AF will develop Fibromyalgia symptoms as well.

All three of these conditions generally require the support of a health advisor or professional who can give them direction. It can be hard for a person to diagnosis himself because of the varied symptoms. People who suspect that they have CFS can often find many resources on the internet and at their local libraries.

Getting plenty of rest is the number one help for people with CFS. It is often difficult for them to rest because their bodies begin to run on cortisone which makes them feel like they have lots of energy. They need to avoid caffeine and stressful situations so they can rest when their bodies are tired. People with CFS sometimes become too worn out and then they "crash" meaning that they can't even get out of bed because they are so exhausted. The best hope for recovery is rest.

Having CFS means being extra careful not to over-do it at home or on the job. When at work, they need to sit in comfortable chairs and take breaks as needed. Oftentimes, people with CFS have unstable blood sugar so they need to eat high protein snacks throughout the day, along with plenty of good water. At home, they may need to rest often, taking a daily nap and not doing too much physical exercise. Gentle exercise is good, but too much exercise will result in extreme fatigue and sore muscles.

Many people with CFS have found herbal supplements and vitamins to help them. Licorice, ginseng, Vitamins B and C, withania root and adrenal drops are some of the supplements and vitamins that people have found helpful. Some people don't notice many improvements from using supplements while others seem to feel much better. Natural supplements do not work as quickly as prescription medications. Before expecting any improvements, be prepared to take supplements and vitamins for several weeks.

A person with CFS needs to plan to slow down and make some lifestyle changes in order to get better. Getting help with housework, working only part time and limiting social functions are some changes that may need to be made. Trips can wear her out physically, mentally and emotionally. Therefore, she may need extra help getting to appointments and the grocery store.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is called an invisible disease because the patient may look and act absolutely normal. He may be completely exhausted, however and unable to cope with too much stress. Taking care of your body, reducing stress and getting extra rest are the best ways to help your body recover from CFS.

How to Make Your Own Skin Moisturizers

>> Friday, June 24, 2011

Skin is the largest organ on the body, which is why it is so important to keep it healthy and moisturized. Moisturized skin not only looks healthier, but heals faster as well. Manufactured moisturizers are often used to achieve moist soft skin, but these products contain harsh dyes and perfumes that can actually dry the skin. With safe natural ingredients, such as bee wax, honey, coco butter, and various oils, you can make your own effective skin moisturizers.

 Moisturizing Lotion

To begin making your own basic moisturizing lotion, you need to melt two tablespoons of grated bee wax. Melt the bee wax with two teaspoons of distilled water over low heat. Once the wax is melted stir in a half a cup of coco butter. Gradually stir in two tablespoons of sesame oil, two tablespoons of coconut oil, and one tablespoon of olive oil. Finally pour the mixture into a glass jar and let it cool. Now you can apply the hydrating body lotion, which also contains vitamins and can heal damage.

Hydrating Balm

Hydrating balm also requires you to melt bee wax. Melt three tablespoons of bee wax in a pot over low heat, but do not add water. Remove the pot from the heat source and add a half a cup of organic extra virgin olive oil. If you desire a scented balm you can add one or two drops of essential oil. Do not add essential oil if you are going to use it on infants or small children. Pour the liquid into a glass container and let it cool. Once cool the balm can be applied.

Moisturizing Mask

Our face is one of the most exposed parts of our body and it can get dry or damaged easily. Here is a simple recipe for a hydrating facemask that contains common kitchen ingredients. Mix one and a half teaspoons of honey, a half a lemon, three tablespoons of yogurt, and a whipped egg white into a bowl. Once well blended apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for about 15 minutes. When the 15 minutes are over rinse the mask off with lukewarm water.

Avocado Facial

A simple but highly effective facial requires only one avocado. Discard the skin and the pit of the avocado, and mash the rest of the avocado until it is creamy. Rub the avocado on your face and let it stand for 15 minutes. Once the time is up rinse the facial off with warm water. This avocado facial is an effective moisturizer because the avocado is rich with vitamins and proteins. Vitamin E found in avocados can help to reverse signs of aging.

Honey Bath Soak

An old trick to moisturized skin is to add a cup of honey to bath water. Adding honey to a warm bath is simple but highly effective because honey absorbs and retains water.

Lavender Bath Soak

Another way to moisturize skin while relaxing in a warm bath is with a lavender bath soak mixture. Mix ten drops of lavender essential oil, one and a half cups of whole milk, and one-third cup of honey into a bowl. Pour into a glass jar and keep in refrigerator when not being used. This mixture will last up to one week and is enough for two baths. Make sure to shake the jar before use, and then proceed to pour half of the lavender bath soak into the tub and enjoy your hydrating bath.

What to do if your child has asthma

>> Thursday, June 23, 2011

Asthma is never a fun thing to deal with, particularly if you're a kid. And if you're the parent of a child with asthma it can be a frightening experience, especially when they are first diagnosed. But there are things that you can do and be aware of that can help your child better deal with their asthma on a daily basis. The most important thing to do is to never panic, regardless of how severe your child's asthma is. Be prepared, plan ahead and everything will be fine.

Know their triggers

Different things can trigger an asthma attack in different children. By knowing what your child's triggers are you can better deal with an attack when it happens. Knowing our child triggers can also help you to take precaution to avoid an asthma attack. Here is a list of the more comment triggers:
  • air pollution
  • dust
  • mold
  • tobacco smoke
  • certain foods
  • exercise
  • pet dander
  • artificial scents found in perfumes, candles and colognes
  • changes in temperature
Things you can do

Once you know what your child's triggers are you can make some changes in and around the house to ensure that it's a safe environment for them. If you aren't 100% sure what your child's triggers are yet, there are still things that you can do to help them.

  • No smoking in the house, the car or around your child.
  • Clean your bathroom, kitchen and basement more frequently to avoid mold and mildew.
  • Wash bedsheets and bedding once a week in hot water to avoid dust mites.
  • Purchase a HEPA air cleaning system to help with potential air pollution and triggers in the air.
  • Remove all carpets and curtains in the house, as they can retain triggers like pet dander and dust.
  • You may want to consider finding a new home for any family pets.
  • For nighttime asthma attacks, get your child a CPAP machine to help them breathe better.
  • Supervise any sports activity to make sure your child doesn't overdo it.
  • When going out in the cold, make sure that they are bundled up and have a scarf over their mouth.

Asthma action plan

Along with the above things, it's always a good idea to have an asthma action plan in place. This will help you, your child and any other family members in dealing with your child's asthma and asthma attacks. Devised with the help of your child's doctor you should have copies of it on the fridge, in your purse, in your child's bedroom and on your child at all times. Most asthma actions plans for children use a colour coded system for easy understanding and quick reference.

  • Green - a list of medications that your child takes on a daily basis and the amount the take.
  • Yellow - a list of medications that your child takes when an attack is triggered and the amount they take.
  • Red - a list of medications that your child takes when the asthma attacks becomes severe and the amount they take.
  • A list of your child's known asthma triggers.
  • Each level will also list your child's peak flow level, which shows how well your child's lungs are working.

Having a child with asthma, regardless of the severity, can be a scary and stressful thing. But as long as you are aware of your child's triggers, take some steps to make your house and your child's life as trigger free as possible and have an asthma action plan, things will be fine.

Beat Insomnia with Binaural Beats

>> Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Insomnia is a medical term referring to either sleeplessness or lack of adequate amount of sleep. A variety of problems has been found responsible for insomnia. An individual may suffer this disease due to severe pain, inflammation, continuous coughing and other physical problems. However, the role of mental disorders should not be ignored in this regard. In fact, the growing instance of sleeping disorder among the youngsters is a mirror to the afore-stated statement. The gen Y is earnestly looking for a solid answer to how to get to sleep.

Human body is just like a machine. It also experiences the wear and tear of time. After a day of crammed work schedule, body also needs a break and relaxation. Sleep is the elixir of physical rest and mental comfort for us. 6-7 hours of sleep is a must for every adult person so that he/she can enjoy the next day with body recharged and mind refreshed. However, those being engulfed with mental sufferings find it hard to have enough amount of sleep. As a result, body invites several problems to make it a safe abode. The combination of tired body and troubled soul hinders one from concentrating on work and accomplishing a task with efficiency. Listening to binaural beats can swap mental discomfort with happiness; thereby bringing some relief for the insomnia patients.

Creating binaural beats is way to transport the frustrated soul and wandering mind to the realm of divinity. By generating these beats, an individual is induced to the brainwave entrainment. The objective of producing the beats is to create a magnetic field into the brains. The stimulated brain functions take an active role in guiding the brain’s pulses to produce the unheard rhythm of sleep. The brain pulse during our sleep is much slower than when we are awake.

It is unfortunate that in spite of such a feasible solution like binaural beats, we often rely on the artificial medication to catch sleep. Over dependence on medicines does not provide any permanent solution to the problem, instead invite several side effects. So, the best way as to how to get to sleep is to listen to the binaural beats. It will bring amazing improvement in case of insomnia and also help one get at the apex of peace and harmony.
