>> Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Residential care homes are of different types like homes for children, permanent care homes for older people and homes for younger adults suffering from physical disability or mental imbalance. Many care homes are private entities while others are supported by local authorities or voluntary sector. Before you decide on a residential care home, you should consider the options thoroughly.

Care Homes for Children

For many reasons, a family may decide to choose a residential care home for their child. A common reason is the physical disability or emotional problems many children suffer from. Care homes for children are like special schools. Through special education and teaching, children are taught to rise above their disabilities and lead a normal life. In many cases, transition support is provided by the care homes for children until they reach the age of twenty.

Permanent Care Homes for Older People

Care homes for older people offer nursing care or personal care. Care homes that are registered to offer personal care focus on providing older people with support in their daily activities. Many older people require medical care and there are care homes that are certified to provide this. This type of care home is called nursing home.

Care Homes for Younger Adults

For younger adults suffering from mental problems, neurological disorder, brain injury, physical or learning disabilities, there are residential care homes that offer special care and support. Adults with drug and alcohol dependency can be taken to a care home treatment.

Some care homes for younger adults provide permanent residence whereas, many offer care on a temporary basis until the adults become fit and capable to lead an independent life or move to another accommodation.

While choosing a care home in Chichester, you should be aware of the qualities of a good care home. A good care home
  • Provide new residents and their families with a guide who describes what facilities and level of care they can expect while they are living in the care home
  • Have an experienced staff who are employed at the care home for a long time; the staff is amicable respectful and supportive of the residents
  • Accept the involvement of residents and their families in the decision-making process through meetings with staff
  • Assist residents with performing activities by themselves and give them freedom like, maintaining connections with the outside community
  • Provide the residents with a choice of healthy and tasty food
  • Take care of the wishes and requirements of all residents and offer a wide range of leisure-time and social activities
  • Have a clean, hygienic and congenial environment perfect for the residents; a healthy environment will encourage residents to feel at home
  • Have staff who value residents’ privacy
  • Have staff that are well-trained for example, nurses specially trained in dementia care
  • Value residents’ modesty and ensure that they are highly-regarded
These are the factors that are essential to keep in mind in order to select the right care home for a loved one.
