Health experts recommend Statins for keep the disease away

>> Saturday, February 4, 2012

Whether it is decreasing your risk of breast cancer, increasing your risk for diabetes or even cause memory loss, cholesterol treatments are one of the biggest sellers in the pharmaceutical industry and among the most prescribed medications in the GPs office and from online clinics.

The taking of statins is primarily for the lowering of cholesterol however over the years we have seen that they have many other benefits and there popularity has increased.  It was even suggested by certain health experts and specialists that taking statins should be mandatory for the over 50s.

Statins seem to have an effect on a multitude of illnesses and conditions and are known to keep certain fatal or dangerous infections away. There is one recent piece of research which claims to prove that treatment like Crestor can be used to treat certain types of breast cancer. The research was carried out at Columbia University and has captured the attention of the medical community.  The research is published in the journal Cell.

The research involved looking at breast cells containing defective versions of the p53 gene. These p53 cells, when they are healthy, stop the growth of cancer cells.

When the p53 gene mutates it actually spurs on the growth of tumours that are cancerous. According to this research though, treating the patients with statins, these cells stopped growing and in certain cases they died.
The research suggests that there might be certain groups of patients who might benefit from statin treatment for their tumour although no major clinical evidence is available to support this yet.

Previous evidence does make the prospect of strong clinical evidence more likely considering a study carried out in 2011. The study estimated that men who were given statins post prostate cancer surgery had 30% less of a chance of developing the cancer again. In other research it was revealed that patients who took statins for over five years were less inclined to develop colon cancer.

If existing drugs like statins are shown to be capable of treating breast cancer, this is very good news. Statins are cost effective and are prescribed worldwide for the lowering of cholesterol and under many different brand names such as the popular statin, Crestor.

Drugs like Lipitor and Crestor have decreased the number of events of cardiovascular disease over the last number of decades. They do this by stopping the action of a liver enzyme which helps initiate the production of bad cholesterol in the body.

Even if you don’t suffer from cholesterol, the drug will reduce your potential to have a heart attack because statins reduce inflammation, a major cause of such a cardiovascular event.  Furthermore, it is thought that the chances of respiratory illnesses and infections are reduced even some time after treatment has ceased. This is why so many medical health professionals recommend that statins be administered to all over 50s.

Statins like Crestor and Lipitor can be prescribed by a doctor in a face to face environment by a GP or by a doctor from an online clinic after a consultation but they can only be taken on prescription.
