A vaginal yeast infection occurs when there is more yeast present in the vagina compared to the good bacteria which safeguards the vulva against the bad ones. For example, taking antibiotics to treat a urinary tract infection can irritate the lining of the vagina and could lead to vaginal yeast infection.
A yeast infection may also occur when the inner vagina is injured, when a woman is suffering from diabetes mellitus, if a woman is pregnant, and if she is taking oral contraceptives. Douching is also one of the most common causes of vaginal yeast infection.
If you are experiencing a burning sensation and soreness in your vagina, then these may be signs that you are having a yeast infection. Other signs of having a yeast infection include pain during sexual intercourse or peeing and change of color and odor of your vaginal discharge.
If you are experiencing the above symptoms, below are some important tips or ways on how you can treat vaginal yeast infection at home.
Antifungal treatments inserted or put inside the vagina – These antifungal products come in various forms such as tablets, ointments, and creams. Sample of these medications include terconazole (Terazole) and butoconazole (Femstat).
Take Lactobacillus Supplements - The live lactobacillus bacteria produce good bacteria that would help eradicate your infection. Always read the instruction on the bottle label carefully.
Make use of a garlic clove as a suppository – Use a freshly peeled garlic clove as an antifungal treatment. Wrap the clove in gauze and insert it inside the vulva.
Eat plain yogurt with active cultures – Eat a lot of yogurt with live cultures to lessen the effect of the yeast infection and to lessen unpleasant vaginal odor.
Lessen Sugar Consumption – Avoid or don’t consume high sugary foods when you are having a yeast infection. It can worsen your condition which could lead to a more complicated vaginal problem.
