Do I have gum disease?
>> Thursday, June 21, 2012
Everyone knows that
they should be brushing at least twice a day to protect their teeth and gums,
but few people really know enough about gum disease or other dental problems to really be
proactive with their oral health. Because of this general lack of understanding
around 70 percent of adults will develop gum disease at one time or another.
So, now you may be
asking yourself, “Do I have gum disease?” If your dental routine is less than
perfect, then there is definitely a chance that you may have the condition. If
possible it is best to get it under control before it worsens because treatment
for more advanced gum disease can be painful and costly.
So, how do I know if I have gum disease?
Fortunately, there are
a number of symptoms that you can look out for that indicate you may be
developing gum disease. Early signs of mild gum disease such as gingivitis
include:
- Persistent bad
breath
- Red or swollen gums
- Some bleeding after
brushing or flossing
Signs that your gum
disease may be developing into a more serious stage include:
- Pain
- Wobbly teeth
- Loss of teeth
If you notice any of
these symptoms, you should visit your dentist for advice immediately.
What are the causes of gum diseases?
The primary cause of
gum disease is the build-up of plaque on the teeth and gums. Everyone wakes up
in the morning with a thin film of sticky substance on our teeth and gums –
this is plaque. It develops as a result of bacteria in the mouth and over time
this plaque can harden and become tartar, which can only be removed by a
dentist.
How to treat gum disease
In the early stages,
gum disease can be easily treated by following a consistent dental health
routine at home. This should include brushing after each meal, flossing to
remove food particles and bacteria stuck between teeth and using a mouthwash to
flush away residual bacteria.
Additionally, you
should quit smoking and cut down on sugary foods in order to reduce the ability
of bacteria to grow freely in your mouth. You should, of course, visit your
dentist regularly for them to check how the gum disease treatment is going.
