Nobody enjoys being ill. Being ill is literally a pain and takes away time we might be enjoying ourselves and being productive. However, there are things you and I can do that will keep illness away and help inform others on health risks to our bodies.
One way to stay healthy and avoid risks to our health is to exercise. Exercise not only keeps you lean and trim but also keeps your immune system in good shape. In other words, it protects your body and mind from getting sick. It also helps when
exercising to “switch” off exercises. For instance, for a week or two, walk or run; then the next two weeks, try some yoga and stretching exercises.
Another way to stay healthy and avoid risks to our health is to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night. Granted, getting a good night’s sleep can be a challenge—especially if we’ve had a tough day and feel stressed out from the day’s events; however, not getting enough sleep gives you a higher risk for high blood pressure or a stroke. To get a good night’s sleep, keep your room a bit cooler than the rest of the house, keep the bedroom dark, and keep any distractions such as a TV or radio out of the room.
Still another way to stay healthy and out of the doctor’s office is to be careful of the medications you take. There are many who depend too much on drugs solving their medical problems. Before taking or continuing certain drugs, talk with your doctor to see if you need to take drugs for any health concerns you have.
One of the best ways to stay healthy is to wash your hands. Every fall season many are exposed to colds and flu and along with that we hear many recommendations for not getting a cold or flu. Washing your hands is the best way to not get the cold or flu and it can be done almost anytime, anywhere.
Many physicians and the CDC say that we should wash our hands before preparing food and also after we have touched meat that is uncooked, before we eat, after we cough or sneeze, after we change diapers on a baby, after using the bathroom and any other time we think we need to wash our hands—especially after shaking hands with others.
Other ways to stay healthy are: eating fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain products, eating small portions of food, not eating late at night or eating foods high in fat, and lowering the stress levels in our lives. In addition, other ways to keep your body in good health are: not smoking, practice safe sex and keep aware of your surroundings, wherever you go. It is also important to check with your doctor on any immunizations that you need to have because infectious diseases can occur at any time. Another very effective way to be aware of health risks to our bodies is to wear wristbands that have a health alert message on it.
