Getting To Know Yourself
>> Thursday, December 22, 2011
Nobody is born knowing who they are. Many ancient societies put their children through rituals that helped them learn who they were, but modern western society does nothing of the sort. As much as we learn from the schooling system, it doesn't teach us anything about who we are as individuals. Until you understand who you are, you will not find your purpose in life. This is the source of much of the suffering in the world.
It is important to realize that, as a human being, you need to embrace not only your similarities with those around you, but your differences.
The things that make you unique are the most important things about you, and learning to harness these differences is the key to becoming great.
What Do I Mean When I Say “Know Yourself?”
It's not uncommon for people to go through life complaining about the things around them. Many of do this without even realizing it. Those who do recognize this flaw often have no idea what to do about it, or fail to recognize it as a flaw.
Upon deeper reflection, however, we realize that the negativity we have toward the world is actually directed at ourselves. When we don't know ourselves, we only know what we don't like. By building a deep inner connection with ourselves, we come to realize our true potential, and start recognizing all the opportunities in our lives. Here are some steps that can help us reach that point.
1. Spend Time With Yourself - Those who have families or a busy schedule will probably argue that this is impossible, but this is untrue. No matter what your life situation looks like, I guarantee it is possible for you to make time for yourself each day. Don't worry so much about how much time it is. Just make sure that it's in your daily routine.
Those who aren't busy will probably say that they already spend too much time alone. But being alone isn't the same thing as spending time with yourself. You may be spending this time pondering what bothers you about the world or yourself, or you might be spending this time absorbing meaningless information from the TV, radio, internet, and newspaper.
Instead, start thinking about goals you'd like to have, grudges you'd like to let go of, and habits that you should be breaking and building.
2. The People Around You Are Mirrors
Ask yourself about people who bother you. Why do they bother you? In many cases, you will discover that it is actually because they remind you of yourself. Rather than lashing out at these people, either internally or externally, spend some time each day breaking the habits and behaviors that bother you in other people.
Ask yourself about people you admire. What do you like about them? Make a list of the personality traits that you admire in others, and think about what changes you would need to make in order to behave more like them.
3. Surround Yourself with the Right People
You naturally adopt many of the behaviors of the people around you. Ask yourself if you would be happy being the average of the people you are surrounded by. If not, find a group of mentors to help you on your path to self discovery. You will never find one person with all the qualities you want from yourself, but you can surround yourself with people whose combined traits add up to your ideal self.
4. Take Positive Risks
If you are reading this there is a good chance you have already spent a lot of time learning about the things you need to do in order to improve yourself. Knowledge is powerful, but only when it is transformed into action. Make a list of all the things you know you need to do in order to reach your goals. Ask yourself if you are actually doing them. If not, why? Ask yourself what you are afraid will happen if you do. There is a good chance you will find the answers a bit irrational. Put it past you, and become the change you want to see in the world.
The great Chinese philosopher Lao-Tsu once said, "He who knows others is learned. He who knows himself is wise." Learn who you really are, and you can become your best self.
