Cancer and its impact on overseas travel choices
>> Friday, March 2, 2012
If a close friend or relative has been diagnosed with cancer, one of your first thoughts may be to take them on a holiday of a lifetime.
When we know that somebody close to us is very ill, the instant human reaction tends to be to want to give them the best time possible. Even though tomorrow is not promised to anyone, it can be jarring to know that someone you care about may not have much time left on this earth.
From a logistical perspective, there are a number of considerations to bear in mind for those keen to go overseas with a person suffering from
cancer. Travel insurance may be more challenging to secure, for example. You should also make sure you are aware of your travelling companion's limitations at the time you are away. While you want to give them a great experience, you should not pressure them into doing things that they may find physically difficult, as this may not only make them feel bad, but also end badly. The key is to strike the right balance between supporting their ambitions and being a sensible friend.
One of the key points to bear in mind at all times is that the trip should be your companion's trip of a lifetime, not yours. Everyone has their own passions and hobbies, so if your pal's idea of a great time is driving a motorhome around the Scottish Highlands, then get on board with that. A sun-soaked week in the Caribbean may feel more typically indulgent, but is not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.
So do plenty of research and you can come up with the perfect holiday for friends or family who are battling cancer? There is so much to see and do in the world that you will not be short of possibilities.
