3 Ways To Solve Discoloured Or Yellowed Teeth
>> Saturday, October 19, 2013
Perhaps due to the pearly whites on show by boy bands such as One Direction, sales of home teeth whitening kits are through the roof this year. Discoloured, yellow or grey teeth can ruin someone’s whole appearance. Conversely, whiten your teeth and your whole face looks better, younger and more attractive. There are a huge range of options for solving these problems but it important to match the solution with the exact problem. For example, if your teeth are crooked or out of shape, no amount of whitening will help and you may need to consider veneers that are fitted over discolored teeth. If your problem is purely discolored but well-shaped teeth, here are three ways to solve them.
Why Do Teeth Stain?
There can be a whole range of causes and that is why it’s recommended that you get a professional consultation with a dentist to match the correct procedure with your problem. For example, if your teeth were discolured when you were young through the use of antibiotics or fluorosis, the three whitening methods outlined here may not help much and you may opt for veneers. If the staining is due to smoking, coffee, cola or wine, or just as part of the normal aging process, whitening methods have a better chance of helping you get the white teeth you deserve.
1: Home-Kits Vs Custom Trays
Both home kits and dental gel whitening work in the same way but the results can be remarkably different. Home kits are cheaper and have basic trays that you fill with whitening gel and put over your teeth. Basic dental whitening works in the same way and although it’s costlier, you will get whiter teeth. A dentist will make custom-made trays that perfectly fit the shape of your teeth and hold the gel closer to your teeth that a home kit tray can. Once your tray is molded, you use it at home just as you would with a home kit. You must apply the gel and tray every night for a set time and then follow up with whitening toothpaste.
2: In-Surgery Laser Or Zoom Whitening
The tray method can take several weeks and not everyone wants to wear gel-filled trays even if only for 30 minutes. Laser or Zoom whitening is an in-office treatment that can significantly whiten your teeth in just one visit. Dentists will protect your gum while applying peroxide gel to your teeth. The peroxide stays on your teeth for around 20 minutes and gives you much whiter teeth than you could otherwise achieve with trays and gel.
3: Kor Whitening
The limitations of gel trays and laser or Zoom whitening is that everyone’s teeth have a natural limit as to how white they can get. With these processes, they rely on you using whitening toothpaste and this only deals with superficial stains and the benefits go away if you discontinue with the toothpaste. The advantage of Kor Whitening is that it allows your teeth to become far whiter than they would otherwise be able to. It is a gradual process that takes place both in-surgery and at home. It is highly effective if your teeth have reached their natural limit of how white they can become.
