How to find a nursing home

The realisation that an elderly relative or friend requires care beyond that which you are physically or mentally able to provide is extremely upsetting, which is why it is so important to find a nursing home that provides the most appropriate care and will cause the least amount of distress to the patient. 

There are many factors to take into considerations, depending on your relative's state of health. Firstly, what level of care do they require? Do they need short term post-operative respite care, permanent residential care, palliative care or specialist dementia care?

It goes without saying that anyone trying to find a nursing home will undertake copious research and seeking a nursing home that offers the required level of care is essential.

Location is another consideration. You want to be able to visit your relative or friend and make sure that others can do so easily. However, more than that, your loved one is far less likely to be distressed if they are able to stay in the same town, or as close as possible, to that where they were living independently. For example, you would not want to move someone who enjoyed their life by the sea into a busy, noisy city.

Check whether there are physiotherapists and other medical professionals on staff, available at any time or whether the requirement would necessitate a visit to a hospital or GP and assess whether your loved one would cope with the ordeal.

Find out what sorts of activities take place in the home, as mental stimulation is just as important and physical. The last thing you want is for your relative to be left in their room all day.

Before doing anything, ask for testimonials and recommendations from friends. All care homes are regulated and rated, so obtain that information from the internet and go through it with a fine tooth comb to make sure the home you have selected is reputable and safe.

By taking your time to find what you consider to be the most highly rated establishment possible, you can be sure your loved one is receiving the best level of care and will be happy in their new home.
