5 Tips When Teaching Your Young Children How To Look After Their Teeth
>> Monday, November 4, 2013
I've talked about a few things that will help people when they're teaching their children how to clean their teeth properly.
One of the most beautiful things in the world is when you discover your child's first tooth coming through. They look so cute in the beginning, but it won't be long until they have a full set of teeth and they're old enough to clean them by themselves. You will be the one tasked with teaching them everything they need to know, so we're going to look at some tips that might help you out.
Start at the back

When a young child doesn't get taught to start brushing at the back there is a good chance those teeth will get neglected. That is why you should always teach them to start at the back every time. It will become an automatic habit that will follow them into adulthood. It's also a lot harder to brush back there, so it's better for them to tackle those teeth before they get bored.
Use a timer

How long do you brush your teeth for at the moment? If you're in a hurry it's probably not as long as you should be brushing them for. Children are always in a hurry because they have toys to play with and cartoons to watch. That means they won't be able to keep brushing long enough to clean their teeth properly, but an easy solution is to use a timer so they'll be told when to stop.
Comfort is a must

Can you picture a child stretching over the bathroom sink so they don't spill toothpaste all over the floor? If they're not yet tall enough to reach easily they probably do this every day, but it's not ideal because they won't be comfortable. When they're not comfortable they won't want to brush their teeth if they can avoid it. If they're not big enough to stand on something you should hold them up or tell them to lean over the bath.
Don't forget floss

Just because someone is young doesn't mean they shouldn't floss their teeth. There is no specific age when they will be ready. Keep an eye on their teeth and when they all start touching together a toothbrush won't be enough to get all the crap out. Turn it into a game for them to see how much food they can get out when they floss.
Let them copy you

I bet your children want to copy you no matter what you do. When you put on your makeup they want to paint their face too. They probably even help you clean around the house even though that doesn't last long. They will also want to copy you when you brush your teeth, so if you both brush at the same time they will always have great teeth.
It won't be forever
You won't have to teach them forever because sooner or later they will become tooth-cleaning experts. After a few years they will be able to brush their teeth properly without even thinking about it. It's just in the beginning you need to teach them right and keep on top of everything.
