Three Easy Ways To Expose Yourself To More Sunlight Every Day

>> Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Although the vast majority of the population feels that they need
to avoid the sun because of the harmful UV rays that can contribute to skin damage and may eventually lead to skin cancer, there are also plenty of reasons why the sun is so important to human health. Getting enough sunlight every day is important for the entire body because it stimulates the body's natural production of vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, the bones, breasts, and organ systems of the body can suffer. And the problem is that, because people spend the majority of their time every day indoors, and because they cover themselves up whenever they do go out in the sun, many individuals are actually deficient in this very important nutrient.

The key, of course, is finding the right balance. Spending a few minutes in the sun every day will make you feel better without putting you at risk. Wear non-chemical based sunscreens and go out there and have some fun by incorporating the following three tips.

Install a Skylight

If you want to get more sunlight streaming into your home, an easy way to do so is by installing a skylight or two in the rooms that you spend the most time. These windows are installed into your ceiling, so the light comes directly down and showers you in sunshine. Although the sunlight is still filtered through the glass, it is a great way to expose yourself to more of the sun's healing energy every day without worrying about adverse effects.

Get Outside for a Bit on Your Lunch Break

Whether you work in a school, an office, or even at home, get outside for a few minutes during your lunch break whenever the weather permits. Of course, you will need to ask for permission to do so from your boss, but if you are allowed to do it, take advantage of this great opportunity to move your body, breathe some fresh air, and let the sun warm your skin for a few minutes as you chat with your friendly co-workers or take some much-needed downtime for yourself.

Get a Dog

A dog is a great companion to have for a variety of reasons, but these pets also motivate you to get outside because they love being active and going for walks. Even if you just spend a few minutes every day walking your dog around your block or watching him or her play in the yard, you will be able to expose yourself to that extra little bit of sunshine. And during the winter season, when the sun sets so much earlier, this is the perfect opportunity to avoid the seasonal depression that many people deal with at that time of the year.

Getting out into the sun for just a few minutes every day can be very beneficial for your mind and your body. Take breaks during your day to get outside and play with your dog, or let the sunlight shine through your windows at home through a skylight.
